As you know that the current flood devastations in Sindh, Pakistan is worst than last year's flood, there are millions of people with no food, medicine and shelter. Kids are dying of hunger. We can not help all of them but with your help we can help about one thousand families for about two weeks and hopefully the water will recede soon and the poor people living out in the open on the portions of the roads can go back to their villages and re-build their lives and homes.

For about $20 US dollars we can provide dry rations for an average family of 6 for about two weeks. So here is what I am proposing: A good friend of mine and I have put aside $10,000 matching funds forSaharo's flood relief program. We will match dollar for dollar up to $10,000, so for an example if a person gives Saharo $100, I will write a check to Saharo for $100, for $500 donation I will write a check for $500, for $1,000 donation I will write a check to Saharo for $1,000. You got it!! My total contribution will be $10,000, and Saharo will get a total of $20,000.00.

We can make this happen in one day or in one week, my money is ready. Lets double it and make it $20,000.00 and feed 1,000 families or about 6,000 people for two weeks. Just look around you and appreciate what you got and think for a second about the helpless but not hopeless humble and poor people of Sindh and Pakistan. We can not help the world, but we can help where we can and we should help where we must and this one is must.

Sindhi community civilized and cultured nation in the sub-continent in the era of anarchy and chaos.

It is a historical fact that people of Indus valley were civilized nation in the period of stateless society. The study of the pre-primitive societies of the world tells us that people were living in the big caves of mountain like animals. On the contrary, people of Indus valley had began to build cities in the banks of Indus River. The old destroyed city of Moen-jo-Daro is considered one of the earliest and most developed of urban civilization. This civilization was also pioneer of education, because written scripts are found on the idols of different animals. People were living in prosperity, peace and harmony which were only religion of ancient sindh. They were unaware from the words of war and hatred.

In this way, glories of sindh spread rapidly in the map of the world. Then every uncivilized nation started to keep eye to attack on the soil of Sindh. Sindhi people were attacked so many times. However, they did not react but surrendered themselves before warriors. When warrior nations observed ethics of Indus valley. They inspired and tried to imitate behavior of Sindhi. With the passage of time, they began to call themselves Sindhi. When they drunk water of Indus river, which made them cool and calm. They started to live in peace and left all those warrior activities.

When one opens the pages of history, he/she will find about thousand wars in the world. These wars killed millions of the innocent people. In fact, there were different perspectives in fighting wars such as war on religion, war on ideology and war on economic resources. In fact, similar wars are still ongoing in the different parts of the world. The war on terror is a big example; fools of fool can say that this is a religious war. It means that war between Islamic extremists, western Christianity as well as Jews. This war killed million innocent people in Iraq, Afghanistan and Pakistan. Now suicide bomb attacks have become fortune of these countries. These extremists’ activities are deteriorating development of these countries.

Now here questions may be arising in the readers’ mind that no any society could be saved from the extremist’s activities in these countries. In this context, again Indus nation has kept away themselves from the religious extremism. They proved again themselves as civilized and cultured nation. Hindu Sindhi and Muslim Sindhi are offering their prayers in place where manders and mosques are located in the same single boundary such as Udero- Lal sain. Udero- Lal sain is a saint; his tomb is situated near Hyderabad Sindh. His tomb is respectable for Muslims and Hindu. We have not heard since years that any person tried to attack on the shrines of Hindu saints in Indus valley. It is also interesting to note that era in which all areas of country are being controlled under extremist activities, but Indus valley is enjoying anti of extremist activities. Sindhi people believe that a teaching of all religions is similar. Every human being is created by God. Then why people are killing to each other in the name of religion.

They also believe in these verses of great poet Shah Abdul latif Bhittai. “May I seek and seek but may not find the beloved for the urge with my soul.” It means that God will not be found in massacre of innocent people and offering prayers. But go to the desolate areas where seek God. But intention should not be to meet Him, only seek and seek. In short, there is no any particular place of God neither mosque nor Mander, and Temple. There is no any question that this approach can be considered to civilized nations. Sindhi people are denouncing extremism. In this way, Sindh needs to be considered before the world superpower countries in order to come and develop the rural areas of Sindh.

The rivers of peace and tolerance are flowing in the soil of Sindh. There is no any threat of security. In spite of this, its people are remaining in poverty. Bread and butter is a big problem for them. There are also lack education, health and sanitation facilities. Children are wandering aimless in the streets of cities and villages. The parents have lack of resources to provide education to their children. The maternity deaths are increasing at high level due to lack of hospitals.

The natural resources of Indus valley are being exploited by external people who are not willing to recruit indigenous people. There is also lack of job opportunities for the youth. The migrated people are being preferred in jobs instead of sons and daughter of Sindh. Therefore, they are compelled to commit suicides. On the other hand, parents are selling their children in order to drive cycle of life.

It is also universally acknowledged truth that when human beings become a victim of appetite. Then he/she turns into beast and begin to kill each other. However, people of Indus valley are showing their tolerance. But there are some factors which are destroying the big city Karachi, capital of Indus valley. There is no doubt that target killings are common nowadays. It is interesting point to note that no any indigenous person involving in target killings.

It is also fact that Sindhi community is living in India where they have contributed a lot in the development of India. In every sector, they are working on the high positions. The are regarded as an honest nation of India. The matter of the fact is that wherever Sindhi lives and believing to serve human beings is a real religion of mankind. In this way, in era of anarchy and chaos, people of Indus valley are praying for the entire world. ”Oh! my Lord keep prosperous to land of Indus along with entire world.” (Shah Abdul Latif Bhittai)

I want to introduce you a visiting Fulbright Scholar from Sindh here in Washington DC. I belong to Khairpur Mirs district. Graduated in engineering in 1985 (80 batch) from Mehran University. Started career as Asst. Executive Engineer in Pakistan Steel and after few years joined Mehran as Asst Professor. In 1994, I was posted as Principal of historic Sindh Madressah, where I served for more than six years. It was the time that Mohtarma Benazir Bhutto asked me to join SZABIST Center for Information and Research (a think-tank for Sindh's issues) as its first director, where I served till 2003, when I was again posted in Sindh Madressah. After some time I went to government of Sindh, where I served as Dirctor-General Colleges (Sindh), DG Ombudsman Secretariat Sindh, DG Environmental Protection Agency Sindh and DG Sindh Coastal Development Authority. Recently, I have reverted back to Sindh Madressah for record third time.

Academically, I hold my graduation in engineering and PhD in Mass Communication. I have written few books also, one of which was BB's biography under title "Benazir Bhutto: A Political Biography." My latest book (2007) has been "Satellite Television and Social Change in Pakistan: A Case Study of Rural Sindh"

I have been to US in 2007 also for about a month when I was invited by University of Florida to participate in an international institute on digital journalism of tomorrow. There were 18 scholars from four continents and I represented Pakistan as well as one in four from Asia. We visited DC also to visit Pentagon and State Department but it was very brief.

Historical Sindh University was honoured by inviting its Current Vice Chancellor Mazhar-ul-Haque Siddiqui during the Prime Time on Sunday July 5, 2009.

Mr and Mrs. Dial Gidwani who left Sindh in 1947, were invited to meet Sindhis from Sindh at the SANA Silver Jubilee. He was honored during the Prime Time on Saturday July 4, 2009 to remember those who were forced to leave Sindh in 1947.

A very informative and constructive session was organised by Mr Iqbal Tareen, another ex-president of SANA, on the spread of Hepatitis B and C in Sindh. This is one of the fastest spreading diseases in Pakistan due to pollution

“Sindhis’ suffering continues under the PPP regime” was what the ex-president of the Sindhi Association of North America (SANA), Mr Aziz Narejo, highlighted in a press release about SANA’s 25th annual conference held in St Louis, Missouri. On completing its quarter-century of activism, SANA appeared to be one of the most mature expatriate organisations. The seminars and discussions held under the conference’s auspices were serious, timely and befitting sans unnecessary bashing of Islamabad and Punjab.

SANA has gained such a prestige that top Sindhi intellectuals and politicians are keen to be invited to its annual conference in the US. This year, Speaker of the Sindh assembly, Nisar Khoro; Vice Chancellor Sindh University, Mazharul Haq Siddiqui; founder of the Sindh Graduate Association, Dr Suleman Sheikh; MNA Umar Gul Jhakrani; and rising intellectual and activist, Zulfiqar Halepoto travelled from Sindh; in addition, several physicians, activists, artists and notable intellectuals from the US and Canada participated in the gathering. As a matter of fact, this annual gathering has gained such importance for Sindhi expatriates that families with modest incomes save the whole year to attend SANA events. This year there were 500 registrations at $70 per family.

The well-attended session was on the politics of the Pakistan People’s Party in Sindh where Speaker Nisar Khoro and Umar Gul Jhakrani were going to defend their party’s performance in the province.

Surprisingly, Zulfiqar Halepoto, who had defended the PPP at last year’s conference, reversed his opinion. From the title of his presentation — “The second betrayal” — one could expect what was to come. Mr Halepoto, doing justice to the title, proved his point from every angle: how the PPP has not fulfilled a single promise that it made during the election campaign. Mr Halepoto alleged that the PPP government in Sindh is the worst in terms of governance and has failed Sindhis on many fronts. Mr Khoro and Mr Jhakrani countered the allegations with high-pitched rhetoric and invoked the Sindhis’ love for the Bhutto family. In essence, their defence was denial and apology poorly wrapped in emotional language.

The other interesting session was on making Sindhi a national language, organised by SANA’s ex-president Aziz Narejo. In an earlier session, Dr Mithal Waqasi had laid the foundations of this theme by tracing the history of the Sindh Valley Civilisation through pre-historic periods. In his view, present-day Pakistan is a continuation of the Sindh Valley Civilization. Dr Suleman Sheikh traced the origin of the Sindhi language from the Vedic period, highlighting the historical fact that the first translation in a non-Ajmi language was done in Sindhi. Dr. Siddiqui also shed light on various other aspects of the Sindhi language.

It was also argued that every language, national or foreign, comes as a package and not just an assemblage of words. Every language brings its socio-historic perspective as well as its heroes and villains with it. In present day Pakistan, first English and then Urdu were used to demolish the indigenous history of the people and their culture of resistance created by the Sufi thinkers of Punjab and Sindh. It resulted in the presentation of invaders like Ahmad Shah Abdali and Nadir Shah as heroes. In this atmosphere emerged a culture of violence and religious extremism in the form of the Taliban and jihadis of various persuasions. Suppression of the Sufi teachings of tolerance, humanity and secular culture played an important role in creating the problems Pakistan is faced with today.

A very informative and constructive session was organised by Mr Iqbal Tareen, another ex-president of SANA, on the spread of Hepatitis B and C in Sindh. This is one of the fastest spreading diseases in Pakistan due to pollution. About forty-six percent of Pakistanis are suffering from this disease and the government is doing almost nothing to stop this epidemic. Activists from other nationalities should follow the work undertaken by Mr Tareen and his organisation.

There were also sessions on political economy moderated by Dr Sarfraz Memon and other leading intellectuals of SANA. Besides analytical sessions, the cultural programmes were quite interesting. This year, the enchanting recitation of Sindhi poetry by Dr Aijaz Turk was sorely missed. But on the whole, the Silver Jubilee gathering of SANA reflected maturity and depth that is lacking in other expat organisations. Of course the hard labour put in by its president Dr Valeed Shaikh and general secretary Dr Shabbir Shaikh was a major factor behind the success of the event.

SANA’s conventions are unique in two respects. First, it is the only community gathering that has a secular colour. People of other countries and religions, notably Sindhi Hindus, enthusiastically participate. Second, it is the only indigenous community that conducts its entire business in its mother tongue, Sindhi. SANA has presented itself as a model for the other ethnic communities of Pakistan.

Sana Idnani..Miss Teen New York, from Mehar/Hyderabad Sindh to New York.

In between college-campus visits, Senior Prom planning and mid-terms, 18-year old Sana Idnani was able to fit the Miss Teen New York pageant into her scheduled as she was crowned the 2008 Miss Teen New York. Sana Idnani made history on the 25^th anniversary of the Miss Teen New York contest as she was the first ever Sindhi crown holder. Miss Teen New York, a contest which dates back to 1983, has been an important segment in every teenage girl’s life. It is this contest which allows them to move forward to the Miss Teen USA pageant, representing their state on a National level. Sana stands out from the rest of the past Crown holders because she is the first South Asian-Indian to ever have been given this prestigious title.

The first ever Miss USA competition was won by Jackie Loughery, also a New York-native. The first Miss Teen USA contest was also won by a Miss Teen New York, Ruth Zakarian, who eventually paved her path towards Hollywood. Shauna Cambill won the Miss New York USA crown in 1999 and went to win the Miss USA crown at the national pageant and later took part in the Miss Universe contest. With such an extensive list of past winners and their accomplishments, it’s up to Sana to represent her community, as well as, Sindhi culture, on a national level as she competes against 49 other young, intelligent and beautiful girls for the title of Miss Teen USA.

In between shopping at Sephora in Times Square, Sana and I stopped for some coffee and we talked about her road to ‘the crown,’ her Sindhi heritage and much more!

Tirusha: Sana, you’re such a young and beautiful girl! First of all, congrats for being crowned the new Miss Teen New York! That’s quite an accomplishment, and especially being a South Asian-Indian. What was your initial reaction when they called your name as the winner?
Sana Idnani: Thank You Tirusha! When they called my name I was absolutely stunned! I felt as if a weight had just been lifted off my shoulders and that I had achieved my biggest dream.

Was this the first time that you have ever taken part in such a contest?
No, I participated in Miss New York Teen USA last year. I was a runner up, and that is what pursued me to try again.

That’s great! And it totally paid off! So Sana, many say that beauty pageants aren’t always for the “bold and beautiful” and that it’s more for the “risky and dangerous,” because at times they can be so cut-throat. Did you ever feel like that during this conversation?
Pageants can be cut-throat, but when you are participating in a state pageant, you should go in knowing that you will be in the public eye and people will talk.

So tell us about ‘the crown’ itself! Do you have to wear it when you go out to public event, along with the Miss Teen NY sash? Did you wear it to school when you first won the contest?
Yes, I do wear it to events, but I usually just wear my sash. When I first won the contest, I did in fact wear it to school because all my friends were dying to see it! I wish I could wear it every day! I also made the announcement on the School PA system wearing my sash and crown.

That must’ve been fun! Now that you’re Miss Teen NY, you will be taking part in the Miss Teen USA contest. Let’s say you were to win the Miss Teen USA title; do realize that you’re instantly going to become a role model to thousands, maybe, millions of young girls across the country – especially from the South Asian community? Does the idea of becoming a role model at such a young age create more pressure for you? What do you think you can do so that people view you in a more positive limelight?
I do have a lot of pressure on me, but I am also glad that thousands of people will look up to me. It is an honor to be a role model. If I won Miss Teen USA, I would help girls feel more secure about them. Many young girls are so insecure and need to believe in themselves. I would also do whatever I could for my community.

You’re a young and intelligent Sindhi girl. Tell us a little bit about your background? Is your family originally from Sindh?
My parents were born and brought up in Lucknow, India. My grandparents from my mother’s side came from Hyderabad, Sindh and my father’s parents came from Mehar, Sindh.

Were your parents the first from your family to migrate to America? When did they come here?
My father came to New York in 1977 and went back and got married in 1981 and brought my mother to New York.

So, do you speak Sindhi?
No; but my parents do.

What are you, personally trying to do, to keep your South Asian-Indian and Sindhi culture evident in your lifestyle?
We have very big family in New York. We celebrate all the traditional Hindu and Sindhi festivals. My parents were even talking about the Cheti Chand Fair which was being celebrated somewhere in New York. We eat Sai Bhaji frequently. My father is a big fan of Sindhi paper.

So right now you’re in High School. What does your future hold for you? Where do you think you’ll go to college? Do you know what field of study you want to do into?
I would love to be a TV anchor. Recently, I have been taking TV broadcasting classes and they are great! I applied to Syracuse University because it has a wonderful communications program, but I am still deciding on where I want to go.

Do you ever think that you would make modeling a full-time career?
No, I want to stick with becoming a TV anchor and maybe modeling would be a second job. Don’t get me wrong, I would love to model, but I would not choose it as a full-time career.

You and I both know that our parents would rather see our generation as more doctors, lawyers and engineers – not actresses or models. How supportive has your family been throughout the entire Miss Teen New York contest and other such activities?
I am very fortunate to have parents and my sibling who were always supportive of me doing anything that I excel at: be it an artist, singer, media person or actress. My family has a varied background. My father is an Italian Restaurant owner, my mother works for media and entertainment and my brother is a financial analyst. In fact, the first time I entered the pageant, it was my mom who forwarded my picture to the pageant headquarters (her coworkers pushed her to do that). All three of them take time off from their hectic schedule to accompany me to several places (community events, photo-shoots, shopping for the pageant and interview question-answer practice sessions).

So Sana, if you were offered a role in a Bollywood movie, do you think you would put your college-education on hold and enter acting?
At present, my focus is on the Miss Teen USA competition. As for Bollywood, I really do not know as yet.

In between photo-shoots and interviews, how does the new Miss Teen New York like to spend her free time?!
I do community service and volunteer for several charities. I love participating in local fashion shows as well as organizing them for my school. Also, I spend time with friends and family.

Sana, it’s been a wonderful time getting to know you and seeing young South Asians representing the South Asian community on such a large platform. We wish you the best of luck in the Miss Teen USA contest and your future plans. Do you have any last words for our readers?

An Exile All His Life By Murli Melwani.

.(Remembrances of things past present a bouquet as Father’s Day approaches – Author’s Note)

“Fire! Fire! Come out. Hurry. Out of the shop!” A group of young men rushed into the store, belted out the warning and dashed out to alert the other store owners on G.S. Road.

We ran out, my father, my brother and I. Panic and confusion ruled the street. We were bumped by people running in all directions. The vision that met me remains etched on my mind: sharp tongues of fire licking the wooden frame of Nagi’s auto parts store next door. In fact all the shops in this earthquake-prone town were made of wood. Although Nagi’s auto part store was separated from ours by a stairway running down to the warehouses below each store, I realized that all the shops along G.S Road were in danger of being gutted if the fire brigade didn’t arrive in time.

My father rushed back into the store and told the sales assistants to start emptying the shelves.

“Spread sheets on the ground and put the goods on them,” he said, pointing to the sidewalk on the other side of the road

People materialized out of nowhere, and in keeping with the fraternal nature of relationships in a small town, began to help store owners ferry goods across the road and dump them on the sidewalk.

The fire enveloped Nagi’s in no time. Three fire engines arrived. These were the types that stored water in their tanks. Two ran out of water in no time and had to rush back to refill the tanks. The fire could have been contained had the engines arrived with their tanks full.

Before we could empty our store, it was on fire. It was too hot to stay next to the mound of merchandise lying on the sidewalk. We moved away, sat on the steps of a nearby hotel and watched thirty years of my father’s hard work being reduced to cinders. To add to our misfortune, our store was under insured.

My father, Herkishendas Sobrajmal Melwani, believed that his lot was worse than that of the Sindhis who were forced to leave Sind because of Partition. He left it voluntarily, but the events that occurred after that departure did not allow him to return even for a brief visit. Thus, he considered himself an exile all his life, during which he carried the burden of the exile: memories and nostalgia.

He shared these moments with us, his children, as we were growing up. He would talk about how people took the air in the evening at a place called Gidu Bandar in Hyderabad. He would tell us how with a "pie", a coin now obsolete, which was a small fraction of a rupee, one could buy a packet of pakoras; for a "payso", a larger fraction, grocery for a day. He gave these examples as a way of painting his birth place as a Sindhi’s utopia: luxury at a reasonable cost.

He recalled riding in his father’s horse-drawn carriage, the prized mode of transportation of the landed gentry. He shared the pain of losing the carriage when his father’s speculation on the Karachi stock market led to the sale of the parental lands. This was the event which led my father to seek his fortune outside Sind. He was in his late thirties at the time. He left behind my mother, my two older sisters, and a just-born son (me) in Hyderabad.

The year was 1939. He went on a two year contract to serve the Lalchand Dhalamal group of companies. World War II broke out a few months after that, and when his contract was about to expire, his employers, impressed by his honesty and loyalty, asked him to open a retail store in Nainital on their behalf. The hill station of Nainital sprang into prominence during the War as an R & R station for British troops. The store was called S.Lalchand. The store became a cash cow in no time. My mother and we, his children, joined him in 1941.

A year later, assured of my father’s skill at making a start-up zoom, the directors asked him to open a similar store in Shillong, in a remote corner of north east India, where India, China and Burma meet. The store was given the same name: S. Lalchand. Shillong was a bigger hill station than Nainital and my father would often put in a 16 to 17 hour day, shutting the store sometimes as late as 2 a.m. The British presence continued in Shillong after the War ended and before anyone knew it, Sind fell to Pakistan during partition.

As business dropped drastically after the end of the war, S.Lalchand was put up for sale. My father was one of the takers. Out of consideration for his years of service, the directors agreed to my father’s arrangement: a down payment that consisted of his entire savings, and the balance in monthly payments over a specified period of time. The store was renamed Lalchand’s. He continued putting in long hours in order to meet his monthly commitments. His hard work paid off.

In the fifties schoolchildren in Shillong sang a ditty in the local language, Khasi. The translation goes something like this:

My mother buys cloth at Lalchand’s.
The colors are fast, the colors are bright
My mother makes my uniform
I play, I read. Everything is right

Contact with the British made my father an anglicized Sindhi. He wore a three piece suit with a matching tie everyday to the store. People referred to my father as the man with the gold teeth: he had three of these on the left side of his mouth. He used his sense of humor to great effect, sometimes to calm an irate customer or defuse a tense situation.

Though anglicized, my father was a Sindhi at heart. For us children he always had a Sindhi "pahaka" in answer to any problem or situation we faced. One of his favorites was: "Sabe mey bhalo". I saw these words as a reflection of his positive attitude.

And now in 1967, when a total of 6 shops down G.S Road had been reduced to ashes, my brother asked him, “ Can you still believe in it: Sabe Mey Bhalo?”

“Now more than ever. Wait and see.”

Sympathetic friends took us, me and my siblings, to their homes for the night. The owners of a hotel gave my parents a room free of charge.

Early next morning my father, my brother and I stood surveying fabrics, garments and colors that had pleased the eye when displayed on shelves. Now they were an ungainly heap of goods on the sidewalk.

“We need to find a store soon. If the goods lie here longer the water damage will turn them into garbage. We can recover part of the cost if we sell this stuff fast.”

There was no store space on rent or lease. The only premises available were a hall on the second floor on Police Bazar. A retail store on the second floor was unheard off in Shillong. My father decided to take it, against all prevailing business logic.

We moved the goods from the sidewalk and spread them on the floor of the hall. We pasted posters round town:” Water-damaged goods going cheap.”

Moved by sympathy, shoppers made the effort to climb the steep steps to the second floor. They were happy to get deals. Within 4 days the usable merchandise was sold out. From the evening of the fifth day, my father made the round of the local wholesalers and bought goods on credit. The insurance company made a prorated settlement because of the under-insurance, but the amount, though small, was a help.

The first thing my father did was to pay our previous landlord the month’s rent that was owed to him. Some of the other store owners who had been affected by the fire had advised him to forget about paying the arrears, just as they had.

“For a Sindhi businessman, his reputation is important.I am getting all this credit because the wholesalers trust me.”

Carpenters began work on the shelves even as the rest of the store had the appearance of a flea market. At night, we slept on the floor. We bought a kerosene stove and cooked hurried meals between attending customers.

My father, brother and I painted the shelves for an hour every night after the store closed, as a way to save money – in a country where labor is cheap.

In time, customers got used to the idea of a retail store on the second floor. Slowly my father got back on his feet. Then his thoughts turned to arranging the marriages of his children.

He completed all his obligations. He loved Shillong where he had earned his livelihood and the respect of his fellow townsmen. But right till the end of his life my father talked about his memories of Sind. His greatest regret was that he hadn’t been able to visit it in 43 years, after his first departure in 1939.

The Philosophy of Sindhis

A Sindhi is an international person who like a chameleon changes his colors according to the lay of the land he is in.

He goes for a walk to the park in the morning in his brand new Mercedes to show off to his friends but to his shop, no way, the old two wheeler will do.
He must have his two pegs of Johnny Walker Black Label before dinner – after the entire brand survives on the International sindhi consumer as does the 555 brand of cigarettes which he proudly sports.
Mortgages the house and borrows money for that coveted Diamond Jewellery set for the wife to show off at the next society wedding.
Masters the native language wherever he lives, Tamil in Chennai or Mandarin in Hong Kong. But at home not a word of Sindhi does he speak, read or write. The whole family knows English, Hindi and the local language but their own mother tongue is taboo.
Worshipping all the Gods without following the religion is the Sindhi specialty. They pray to Guru Nanak, have a Granth Saab at home, but they are not Sikhs. No kesh,kada or kirpaan for them. No sir. They go to Vaishnodevi for a Himalayan vacation and walk from Ahmedabad to Ambaji for exercise, but certainly not for religious purpose.
Sindhis are the greatest followers of Saints and Sadhus. They believe that these ascetic creatures will wash away all the wrongs they have done to date. They go to Bias to the Radhaswami Headquarters, to Puttuparti for blessings of Shri Satya Saibaba, to Asharam Bapu in Sabarmati or to Laxmi Bhagwan in Mumbai and to any other Saint they have heard of through their own grapewine.
Sindhis have no tradition of Ancestry. They do not even have a surname to speak of leave alone caste and creed. It is said that a century or so ago when Sindhi children went for admission to convent schools, they were asked to fill in forms giving their surname. Not having one, they looked up their forefathers list and simply added ‘ani’ after the oldest and called it their surname. Thus one Ramchandani has no relation whatsoever with another except that great grandfathers of both were named ‘Ramchand’.
All Sindhis are highly motivated by the word ‘PROFIT’. Wherever it exists, you will find a Sindhi, be it Dubai or Toronto, Colombo or Miami, Lagos or London. They get attracted by the word and make a beeline for that destination. You will find the creatures in way out places like Suriname in S South America and Helsinki in Finland.
Food wise Sindhis are Gourmets. Willing to try anything. Just as happy eating snails in Paris or Kangaroo meat in Australia. Relish all kinds of cuisine be it Chinese, Mexican, Italian Pasta, Hot dogs and Hamburgers or the more sedate British Fried fish and chips. Their favorite of course is the desi kababs and biryanis. Sindhi cuisine is also quite exotic both vegetarian and non-vegetarian.
Looking for a Sindhi school for your kids. Sure, there are lots of them run by various Sindhi Trusts. But you know what, the medium of instruction in each and every one of these schools (pronounced - Schools) is English.
Here is one Sindhi trait you will never find in any other ethnic community……… A Sindhi will never have a Sindhi family doctor nor fight a legal battle in the court with a Sindhi lawyer. Even his chartered accountant will be anybody but a Sindhi (except if he is working the black market)
You won’t find a Sindhi without an uncle in Hong Kong, a cousin in the Canary Islands, an aunt in Mauritius or a distant relative in Saigon, Vietnam. Sin his are evenly distributed all over the planet. Anywhere you go you will definitely find a few of the species.
Sindhis working abroad are called ‘Sindhworkies’. They make their money there and once every couple of years they come to India for a holiday and to meet their family and relatives. Here they generously distribute gifts to all and sundry….Rolex watches Made in Singapore, French Perfumes concocted in Kenya, Arrow Shirts duplicated in China and all kinds of knick-knacks picked up at the discount counters of the Dollar Stores all over the world.
One other way of spotting this Sindhworkie is the strong smell of Eau de Cologne emanating from him which he has so generously sprayed on himself before venturing out into the desi world.
During this Sindhworkie’s stint in India, he must visit any or all of the following places:
a) The Golden Temple at Amritsar

b) The Saibaba Temple at Shirdi

c) The Brahmakumari Ashram at Mount Abu

d) The Balaji Temple at Tirupathi

e) The Mataji Temple at Vaishnodevi.

f) The Sadhu Vaswani Centre at Pune

At Mumbai, he will leave no stone unturned in wrangling an invitation to a Bollywood bash and meet up with a couple of film stars, who of course will later become his ‘Langoti yaars’ and bosom buddies.
Along with learning the local language and customs the Sindhi is also quick to change his name to suit the local environment so that the locals do not have to twist their tongues calling him. Thus Mohan Sadhwani quickly becomes Mike Sadhwani; Jetho Harjani becomes Jerry Harjani, Tekchand Motwani changes to Tom Motwani. Given the option he will change his surname too, like Sipahimalani becomes Sippy, Mulchandani chan ges to simply Daney and Kripalani to Kripps.
For a quick snack nothing like the good old Papad. Before a drink, with the drink or alongwith the meal, the papad is very much part of his lifestyle.
One good thing about the Sindhi, he carries about 25 different credit cards but never uses any of them. Don’t want to see any bank entries to explain, do we. Pay by cash only, besides what about the interest charges on those credits.
The affluent Sindhi has a large and neat library of Books at Home and Office. All properly stacked with the latest Best Sellers, Classics, Encyclopedias and Dictionaries. Like the tusks of the elephant, all these assets are for display only. Never reads any of this stuff. For literary consumption, he prefers the more glossy picture filled magazines like Playboy, Penthouse or the Desi Star Dust, Filmfare, Femina and Debonair.
Sindhis are Movie Buffs of the Bollywood kind. They have seen all the pictures of Raj Kapoor and Nargis, Dilip Kumar and Meena Kumari and of course all Amitabh Bachhan movies. But they are not averse to the new heartthrobs like Shah Rukh Khan or Aishwarya Rai.
We have mostly talked about the Sindhi Males. But what about the female of the species. Sindhi women are generally flashy, prefer loud and bright colors, and adorn as much jewelry as can be accommodated by their necks, forearms and ears. Diamonds are the preferred precious stones. They are ardent users of Revlon and Max factor products for enhancing their natural good looks and a more than ‘healthy’ figure.
Sindhi Females prefer sparkling gold and silver laced sandals to the more sedate leather slippers. Similarly the handbags they carry, the jazzier the better. Sorry no Gucci’s or other designer accessories for this breed.
Go to any restaurant in town for lunch. You will see at least a couple of Kitty parties in progress. Look closely and you will spot at least half a dozen or more of these Sindhi females. You will find them looking at their attire and accessories, but if you still can’t then listen. The loudest of the lots are likely to be Sindhi. They do not have a volume control on their vocal cords. They simply love these kitty parties.
Sindhis are real geeks when it comes to rituals. They will not eat non-veg food on Mondays, Full Moon Days (Satnarain) or Zero Moon days (Gyaras). Laxmi puja is a must in Diwali, Eat Bhorindas (Til Ladoos) in Uttaran and Ghiers (Large Jalebis) in Holi. Observe all the Festivals and celebrate the national Holidays like Republic Day and Independence Day with fervor.
A Sindhi is a born optimist. Turns a blind eye to the darker side of life. A gambler by instinct, he wants to ride his luck, sets his targets high and maybe even unachievable.
The negative side of Sindhis is they never help each other. They treat all Sindhis as competitors whether in business or in their social life. So if a guy is going down or doing badly, push him further so that he can never rise again. (It's a Disheartening Fact of SINDHIS )
Sindhis believe in working hard for achieving their goals. They are quite ruthless along the way and if a few people get destroyed in the process, so be it. That’s their problem.
An average Sindhi is a Zero Culture person. For him a painting is a painting whether a Rembrandt or a Filmy poster. Classical Music is a lot of noise, the filmy remixes are better. He would much rather see a dance by Rakhee Sawant than a Bharat Natyam of Mallika Sarabhai.

O also it goes with Sightseeing. No wild life resorts for him or a visit to the Louvre’s. He would prefer a visit to the Moulin Rouge in Paris or a Disco Party in Singapore. The scenic beauty of Switzerland will be simply wasted on him. But Mardi gras in New Orleans would be a treat.
All said and done, it is a GREAT Community, the epitome of ‘Self-Help’, no hang ups, high acceptance level and a community of equals.

Mother’s Day Gives Sindhi Americans a Sense of Belonging

Want to see how the melting pot works its magic of assimilation? Observe how ethnic observances change their flavor and color as they blend with American traditions. The latest reminder of this truth was the picnic the Sindhi Americans organized at HoblitzellePark, Plano, on May 3, 2009, to celebrate Mother’s Day, a week in advance.

Sindhi Americans are one of the few ethnic minorities that have no homeland of their own and exist only as a diaspora. In 1947 India was divided into two countries, India and Pakistan, on the basis of religion. Hindu Sindhis were in a minority in Pakistan at the time of Partition. To avoid communal violence, they had no choice but to fan out to almost every country in the world. Although the Hindu Sindhis left their homeland with little more than the clothes on their backs, they prospered by dint of hard work and their innate skill to adapt to new cultures. In the United States they continue to be a model community.

The celebration of Mother’s Day every year in Dallas is one example of the Sindhi American community’s attempts to join the mainstream.

The blend of two traditions was evident in the food that was served at the picnic. The barbeque pits were afire. Corn on the cob was a favorite with all ages. The aroma of barbeque sauce mingled with the waft of stronger spices of the choley, dhokla and sanna pakora spread out on the tables in the pavilion.

A cake, which is an American rather than a Sindhi tradition, was cut to the symbolic mother. The words of the recitation that accompanied the cutting were improvised on the spot to the tune of “happy birthday to you”

It was a day for improvisation. The remix of traditional and modern music had the ladies bursting into a series of impromptu dances. These mutated into a singing competition between the women and the men, a sort of musical relay, where continuity was maintained by the opposing team starting a new tune with the last word of the competitor’s song. The presence of mind and the wit involved in not dropping the baton added to the liveliness of the occasion. Needless to say, the men lost.

The picnic was organized by the DFW Sindhi Association. “It’s one of the four events on the calendar of our association,” Mr Lal Daswani, its hard working president, explained, as he supervised the proceedings with a genial eye.

Traditions give the ethnic communities strength, but observing American customs give them a sense of belonging. What more than Mother’s Day?

Sindhis Beyond South East Sindh

Searching the World for Sindhis comes natural to every Sindhi .
Everyone knows that partition brought untold miseries to hundereds
of thousands of Sindhis. Sindh may not have been divided territorially
but the psycholigical wounds have been so intense that they will
continue to hurt. Thinking of partition for many of us only brings
the plight of Hindus who were displaced but the fact now is that it
was not only Hindu Families who were displaced but many Sindhi Muslims,
Sindhi Christians, Sindhi Parsees and Sindhi Jews were cut off psycologically
from their territory. On the left we give an extract of Sindhi Muslims

Late Ahmad Bux Sindhi of Bikaner Rajasthan

Ahmad Bakhsh Sindhi was born to Haji Mola Bakhsh Sindhi and his wife, Saira Hazan in Bikaner, Rajasthan. Mr. Sindhi was primarily raised and educated by his mother because his father died when he was 8 years old due to choking on a bone.

In 1944, Mr. Sindhi was a gold medalist/top achiever during his Master of Arts and Bachelor of Laws studies at prestigious Aligarh Muslim University in the city of Aligarh in Uttar Pradesh, India. Subsequently, from 1944 till 1947, he became a lecturer in philosophy at Dungar College in Bikaner.

On June 6, 1945, Mr. Sindhi married Ameena Begum of Bikaner. They had a happy marriage which produced five daughters and one son.

Mr. Sindhi’s first political achievement was being appointed to the position of Cabinet Minister for the independent state of Bikaner by its Maharaja, Sir Sadul Singh, in 1948.

From 1949 till 1980, Mr. Sindhi practiced law in the Rajasthan High Court in Jodhpur's Zeb Manzil. He was known for feeding the poor there as well as his overall social work for the lower class in the area. One notable instance was his campaign to help people get housing instead of living on the street by the Sardarpura Cemetery.

During a 1971 debate regarding the Indo-Soviet Treaty of Peace, Friendship and Cooperation, Mr. Sindhi is cited to have tried to add the amendment to the treaty.

"...If any country invades us [India], we shall depend solely on our own defensive resources and will try to obtain as much aid from other friendly countries as possible"[1]

In 1980, he was elected to the Rajasthan Legislative Assembly (or Vidhan Sabha), representing the city of Jodhpur, India. Soon after, Mr. Sindhi was named Deputy Speaker of the Rajasthan Assembly for one year.

It was in 1983 when he reached the pinnacle of his political career, when he became Law and Justice Minister in Shiv Charan Mathur’s ministry by Indira Gandhi. He retained this position until March 1985.

[edit] Life After Politics
Mr. Sindhi spent the next few years of his life alternating between life in India and in the US to visit his children and grandchildren. By 1994, he eventually settled down in the US, living with his wife and their son.

After a strenuous time living with his son, Mr. Sindhi had a cardiac arrest in 2000, and was taken to William Beaumont Hospital in Detroit. He died on April 28, 2000 from complications of his cardiac arrest. At his bedside was his daughter, Naseem Salim.

Dr. Aijaz Turk conducted Sindhi Books Launching Ceremony. He invited all those who wanted to launch their books to take their seats on the stage.

Syed Mazhar Jamil has written a voluminous book “Jadeed Sindhi Adab: milaanaat, rujhaanat, imkaanaat”. It is an epic book and reviews history of Sindh, evolution of Sindhi literature and social and cultural aspects of the Sindhi society.

Zulfiqar Halepoto who had traveled from Hyderabad Sindh especially to attend and speak at SANA convention has written “America Yaatra” based on his trip to USA last year again to attend SANA Orlando, FL convention.

Ishtiaq Ahmed Ansari is a versatile writer and author of several books. He launched his book: "VoRium Sabh VathaaN”.

Dr Manzur Ejaz runs a Punjabi portal with a very rich Sindhi section. He has published Punjabi translations of Sindhi writers Amar Jalil, Nasim Kharal and others. He introduced two publications Amar Kahaniyaan and Mixed Grill translations of stories by the two Sindhi writers Amar Jalil and Nasim Kharal.

Ali Nawaz Memon a development professional and former World Bank official has written a book in Sindhi and English: “Sindh Sudhaar Sochoon”, “Sindh Development Thoughts”.

All the books were very well received by the audience. The authors briefly spoke of their works.

Dr. Mazhar Khawajo of Michigan delivers his latest lecture at the Medical Seminar in SANA Dallas Convention. He has delivered very useful lectures in the past at the SANA Conventions. This is his 4th lecture. Dr. Mazhar Khawajo is a graduate of Agha Khan University in Karachi Sindh. He delivers lectures on International level. His speciality is Psychiatry.

"THEY came with painted faces of time and a need for purpose,and motion: wanting to fill in the gaps. Like angels with jazz on their minds." These lines aptly describe the spirit of Katarzyna Pollok, a Roma Sinti gypsy, and her work. For Katarzyna, who is on a Journey to rediscover her "gypsy roots," a cultural journey which has taken her from Morocco to Italy, Israel to India.
"My parents tried to hide my Sinti descent because of the traumatic experiences of my father, who bore the brunt of Holocaust. But I was eager to know about my ancestors and my roots," reminisces Katarzyna., who speaks little English, bur whose eyes and expressions get every message across.
Dressed in a fiery red outfit (she hates the colour black), long braided hair, black boots, big gold hoopla earrings (gifted by her husband), Katarzvna ika Kasia is unmistakably vibrant, bright and has that free spirit one hears gypsies have. "I am not a traditional gypsy. I am a modern gypsy with a modern way of life," she says.
For this modern gypsy, who was here to attend a friend's wedding, this first trip to India has been mesmerising. "I love the people, there seems to be a bonding and it's good to know that my forefathers went from here too," she says. The Roma Sinti believe their forefathers were from Sindh. Along with this gypsy came her art - her paintings which are as striking as her personality. Though just a handful, which she has brought from Germany where she resides with her husband, they are interesting with a dance of vibrant colours and play of forms. -The energy in her work is unmistakable. From Japanese Geishas, Jewish arabesques to Egyptian Pharaohs and Gypsy angels, Kasia has absorbed something from different cultures and woven into her work, but remains a gypsy, at heart. A gypsy who leaves you mesmerised with her vibrancy, her energy and her free adventurer spirit.

Sindh’s cold mountain resort in cold storage

* Gorakh Hill Station: The one place Karachiites can escape to in the summers has been ignored despite its fantastic tourism potential

JOHI: As Karachi sweltered in the summer’s heat, it was a cool night at Gorakh Hill in district Dadu, which is otherwise known for its cooking 40-degree plus temperatures.

It was the weekend and a group of people, including journalists, had gathered at the hill station for a festival organised by ActionAid and local NGO Village Shadabad Welfare Organisation. Those who knew about Gorakh had brought warm clothes, especially the people from the surrounding areas, who even brought blankets for the night’s stay at the proposed summer resort located at the Khirthar mountains at a height of 5,866 feet.

But some of the guests from Karachi, Hyderabad and other parts of the province were caught by surprise. “I did not expect such cold weather here during the hot summer,” exclaimed Asghar Azad, a journalist from Karachi.

He was one of the 100-strong group a majority of which were visiting the site for the first time. Over two hundred local people turned up as well. The hosts had arranged 4-wheel jeeps to the hilltop but the old ones spluttered out and it was only the locals who managed to complete the trek on motorcycle. An elderly gentleman in his 60s made it before us city folks. According to guests Muhammad Nawaz and Nabi Bux they had to drag the bikes up at some points, much to their misery.

PPI reported that basically the problem is that the work on developing Gorakh hill station, the first ever such project to promote tourism in Sindh, is being done at a snail’s pace. Work on the approach road is exceptionally show and of very poor quality, as hardly 15 km of a narrow strip, with sharp and steep turnings, has so far been built contrary to the claims of the previous government that 53km of road had been completed.

Village Shadabad NGO members Akbar Lashari and Zulfiqar Birhamani told Daily Times that this was the first ever large gathering of people at the hill. They were of the opinion that the local people had struggled to arrive there because of their interest in the site, which could be Sindh’s answer to Murree.

“The dry hilly spot is dotted with wild olives, scrubs and acacia bushes and presents a Quetta-like profile. Because of its hilltop location Gorakh is cooler then the Quetta valley and gets really chilly in winter,” writes Brigadier Yasub Ali Dogar in the recently launched Shadabad magazine’s special Gorakh edition.

The festival was mainly held, reported PPI, to point out the slackness of the authorities who should be highlighting the importance of Gorakh, one of the 50 peaks selected by British rulers in subcontinent for a hill station. It has the lowest minimum temperature of 5.0 degrees centigrade at night and 15 degrees centigrade in the day during the summer.

The participants of the festival criticized the previous government for making false claims that it had built a road and provided other facilities for tourists by spending billions of rupees through the Gorakh Hill Development Authority (GHDA).

PPI reported that WAPDA has completed its work of erecting poles, installing cables from the foothills to the top where a transformer could also be seen but it needs to be activated. Moreover, the GHDA has laid a water supply line and the boosting stations are under-construction in addition to a single-room police check post at Khawal pass, 15km below Gorakh peak.

A two-room rest house, built during late Abdullah Shah’s government, was in a dilapidated condition, and the only addition made by previous coalition government was a two-room rest house made from fiber at another peak.

According to the revised PC-I, approved on February 24, 2003, the cost of Gorakh Hill Station project was Rs 198.269 million including the construction of roads, bridges and a water supply scheme. The Executive Committee of the National Economic Council (ECNEC) had approved the project and the Sindh Government had started the work on the 53km road strip from Wahi Pandhi, a small town at the foothills to Gorakh peak. Later, the federal government agreed to share 30 percent of the cost of the entire project.

The strip would have 10 viewpoints and would have a 10-bed emergency hospital, waterfalls, a filter plant, security posts, horse and camel riding tracks, cable cars and chair lifts.

The then prime minister Mir Zafarullah Jamali had also visited Wahi Pandhi road and had directed the Sindh government to initiate an inquiry into the matter, which still was pending.

The topography of Gorakh peak is 1,340 acres in Sindh and 1,000 acres in Balochistan. The weather in summer is very pleasant, with moderate temperatures during the day, dropping to slightly chilly at night. In winter, however, the temperature goes down to almost -8 to -12 degrees centigrade. Being the highest peak in a region, the hill offers a beautiful view of a valley from the top. The area is surrounded by arid mountains with small green pastures at certain points. During the rainy season, one can see various streams of water flowing throughout the area.

Due to bad road conditions, the 53km distance takes about 5 hours. The track is not dangerous but since it has a few sharp turns at some places, visitors get trapped at certain turns where work has not been carried. The mountain had been blasted with dynamite and there were a number of stones on the road, which make it impossible for the tires to grip firmly.

Will someone please let me know what has the Bhutto family, or PPPP (I have lost count of how many Ps they currently have) ever done for Sindh or Sindhis, except derail the cause of Sindh at every critical juncture in recent history. They have time and again sold Sindh's interests for their personal glory and profits, and the opportunity to sleep with their masters in Islamabad, the most recent example being what it is doing right now.

PPP has decided to throw a lifeline to MQM, Sindh's worst enemies in the recent history, the cancer which is killing Sindh from inside, at a time when these perennial parasites have been completely exposed and isolated. When no other political force in the country is willing to talk to them, our elected leaders have chosen to lick their feet, just to please their common masters.

I am afraid we will not be able to survive as Sindhis until and unless we stop relying on these modern day Uncle Toms, and realize that our only salvation lies in believing in ourselves as Sindhis, and being sincere to no one else, except our Motherland. Our one and only slogan should be "Jeay Sindh", not "Jeay Any Individual", or "Family".

I would like to make it very clear that this is not meant to be an attack against any individual or an attempt to heart any-body's feelings. I fully realize that we all have been deeply hurt again and again over the last half a century, so the last thing I want to do is pour salt over our common wounds.

But it is high time that we start getting our heads out of the sand and start facing the harsh realities of life.
